In an earlier Straight Talk coverage map post, I mentioned how the actual coverage area seemed more extensive that what was shown on their official map. Well, the good folks at ST have now posted a new coverage map on the Straight Talk website that much more accurately reflects true coverage area.
Straight Talk has been running offers on the website where you can get a FREE reconditioned phone with the purchase of an airtime card. Yes, I said FREE, and I even said it all caps just so you would see it. Here, let me even make it bold and red for you: FREE!!
Seriously, if you are at all interested in trying out the Straight Talk service, and I assume you are since you're at this site, then click on the banner below for more details. The refurbished phones work great, and the savings can be over $100 depending on which phone you buy. Awesome, awesome deal.
Now, as I was saying, the coverage map updates are good. ST has been in test mode with TracFone and Verizon for the past several months, but it looks like they are ramping it up just in time for the Christmas shopping season.
There can be little doubt now that Straight Talk has passed the test and is going to be a long-term part of the TracFone family. This gives me better warm-fuzzy feeling about buying one of their phones, since I can be reasonably sure that the service isn't going to be pulled any time soon.
As of the fall/winter of 2010, Straight Talk has also been offering some phones on AT&T, so definitely check the coverage maps.
The coverage is amazing Verizon is quite good after years of suffering on AT&wait and see.
Love the price, too.

I got the Straight Talk Finesse. Super cool phone! It's a touch screen and I am not paying and arm and a leg for the service. I pay $45 a month for unlimted talk, text, and data. There are no overage fees and it has great coverage. Got mine at Walmart across the street from my house -- super convenient.

Danny,
Most Straight Talk phones work on the Verizon network, though the new T401g works on the ATT network (I think). Anyway, so if the area in Kentucky you are traveling to is not in the Verizon or ATT service area, then you are out of luck. I'd say you're good to go for Florida, though.

Straight Talk has done nothing but serve me well. I live in Florida, which is extensively covered by Verizon, so my signal strength has really never been better. The internet plan is a bit slow but it costs 1/3 as much as I used to pay on iPhone I feel lol so I'll take a few trade offs.

unless you buy the bigger straight talk phones the coverage is limited. The LG 220 phone is only good in some areas, while the 420 goes a lot farther. I bought a 220 in florence ala, and have sinced moved to franklin ky and my ST phone wont work here. When i called ST i was told i would have to buy another phone and there was nothing they could do to help me.

You guys don't like the E71? I find it to be their best phone. Don, different areas are within different networks. If you buy a phone in an ATT area then you move to another area, you will have to buy a Verizon phone.

I had mine for about 6 months ( started with recondation phone and I just upgraded to a touch screen ( 3g ) and so far still great worked from lower DE all way up to Mid Pa mountains with no problems, and it works better than my girlfriend's old phone in the basement were she lives ( her's lost signal and was just a paper weight )
